The Winnipeg Construction Association recently provided a submission to the Manitoba Commission on Kindergarten to Grade 12 Education. In this submission we provided support for the High School Apprentice Program (HSAP) and suggested that more could be done to inform students on career options in construction.
We also draw attention for the need of well-developed basic reading writing and math skills. All students should graduate from high school with the ability to communicate and perform basic math without the assistance of a computer. These are essential employment skills, needed whether you work in a boardroom or on a construction site.
We also took the opportunity to raise the issue of promptness of payment from school divisions as we have had many members mention there can be considerable delays. Manitoba will have Prompt Payment legislation at some point in the future, and its important school divisions are aware of this.
