Proposed Prompt Payment bill introduced into Manitoba Legislature

Winnipeg, June 3, 2019 – Today, during the final sitting day of the Spring Legislative Session, Reg Helwer, MLA for Brandon West, introduced Private Member’s Bill 245, The Prompt Payments in the Construction Industry Act to the Manitoba Legislature. Prompt payment has been a major concern for the construction industry, and several other provinces have already moved to some form of Prompt Payment legislation.

“The Winnipeg Construction Association wants to see prompt payment become a reality in Manitoba,” said WCA President Ron Hambley. “This bill’s introduction is a step in the right direction.”

Today marks the end of the Spring Legislative Session. If an election is called and held before the next sitting day (scheduled for October 2) this bill will be removed from the Order Paper and will need to be introduced in a new session following the election.

“While the bill won’t move forward immediately with the end of the legislative session, we’re happy to have plenty of time to review the bill before the second reading happens in October,” said Hambley. “If an election happens before then, we look forward to working with the provincial government to help make prompt payment a reality at that time.”
